Introduction: Tutoring Fall 2024

Hi!  My name is Albert and I'm a CompSci major at Sacramento City College.  I've decided to try out tutoring this semester for Physics 410 since I had a good experience with the class last year.  I haven't started working just yet so I'm very anxious how things will go from here.  Unfortunately things aren't looking too great already caus' this blogpost is my first assignment for my tutoring class and it's already one day late.  I'm juggling a couple difficult classes this semester on top of transfer applications so please forgive me!  Anyway, I'm excited to teach about physics this semester since it's such a fun subject.  In fact, I even added physics as a potential major in my applications!  There are a lot of formulas but they're incredibly intuitive.  You can learn so much just by knowing what values are in them and the relationships they have with each other.  I picked up a lot of experience throughout this course and I'm eager to share my knowledge with brand new students.  Hope you guys all have a great semester!

  1. Hi Albert,

Real talk: The moment you mentioned the PHYS 410 course, I knew you were the real deal. Embarrassingly to say, but I barely passed PHYS 310. Lol. Therefore, I am impressed that such a course is in your wheelhouse. Math and Physics-type subjects have never been my forte. Language and Humanities has always been my thing; regardless if it is foreign or English.

As for your new venture as a tutor, I want you to keep some of the nervousness. Maybe that raw/vulnerable energy will turn into a driving force to better guide your tutees. And with any remaining feelings of anxiety, just toss it away. We all have different levels of uncertainty when beginning new things. Just remember that you are capable of easing someone else’s anxiety; the anxiety that they will fail their PHYS 410 course.

Alberto, You have the power to set your tutees on the right track. That makes you a hero. Lets flex those intellectual muscles, and create an environment for learning. Until next time.

    1. Hey Guru!

Thanks for the encouragement! Ironically, I can't claim to be good at math at all. I'm struggling so much in my math class this semester I actually want to cry. :( I always wanted to be better at language and writing composition so honestly I'm envious!

I will definitely try my best to dispel my tutees' anxiousness with this subject. I know how it feels to be on the brink of failure and often wished to be delivered to the destination as quickly as possible. The key I think is to start small and build confidence and move at a productive learning pace rather than a hasty one. That obviously applies to me as well!
